Rainbow Bridge National Monument
Just north of the Arizona-Utah border within Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Rainbow Bridge is the largest known natural bridge in the world--standing 290 feet above the stream bed and stretching 275 feet wide. It has an enormous and almost perfectly formed arch below and a curved surface above, giving the effect of a rainbow. One of the seven natural wonders of the world, Rainbow Bridge is considered a sacred place by many American Indian tribes.
The bridge is reached by a 14-mile hike over rugged terrain or by boat and a quarter-mile hike. Hikers must obtain a permit to hike this trail from the Navajo Nation's Parks and Recreation Department, P.O. Box 308, Window Rock, AZ 86515.
Regularly scheduled boat tours on Lake Powell provide access to Rainbow Bridge. Tours depart from the Bullfrog Marina and Hall's Crossing in Utah and the Wahweap Marina in Arizona; phone (800) 528-6154 for information. Camping and swimming are not permitted within the monument grounds. For information contact the Superintendent, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, P.O. Box 1507, Page, Ariz. 86040.
